Newsline #14 - 13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

NEWSLINES

13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
Newsline #14 – July 23rd, 2007

DOING SUNDAY WITH STYLE!

Now that was one “great-film-festival-day, everyone!” as Managing Director Jared Earley has a habit of saying. But it’s true, Sunday couldn’t have been any better. The events were a blast and every screening was either sold out or jam-packed. This can only mean one thing… you actually took the advice from yesterday’s newsline and took advantage of every possible film festival second that was offered. Okay, okay, so you were probably already planning on enjoying every possible moment of screenings and events on Sunday to begin with, but it couldn’t have ended on a better high note for our last “full” festival day!

FESTIVAL FAVES

Now tonight the Prince Theater will continue to show festival screenings for Butch Jamie, Spider Lilies and Men In The Nude while the Wilma Theater and the Arts Bank will offer some of this year’s festival favorites. Here goes.

Wilma Theater

7:00pm - Out at the Wedding – The only centerpiece screening this year to be selected to the festival favorites, this film is about “misunderstandings, family and love.” It sold out earlier in the festival, so don’t miss your last chance to see this with a group of friends.

9:15pm - Curiosity of Chance – This John Huges-styled 80’s throwback is a comedy about an openly gay teen facing highschool.

Arts Bank Theater

7:15pm - In Sickness & In Health – This film brought the audience to tears and applause during its first showing last Sunday and has already been rallied the attention of the Philadelphia Inquirer since it screened 7 days ago. It’ll certainly continue to provoke change and to assist in the fight for same-sex marriages.

9:15pm - Picture of Dorian Gray – Oscar Wilde’s timeless story is retold in this experimental and artistic repainting of the classic tale of vanity.

WALKING DOWN THE AISLE

Tomorrow the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival will walk Tori Spelling down the aisle for this year’s closing night film Kiss The Bride. We’ll also present this year’s Award recipients before heading over to Twenty21 to close this year’s festival with style!

Tickets for the closing night party are becoming scarce, so be sure to purchase yours today before they’re all gone.

PICTURES! PICTURES! PICTURES!

Ok, so here’s the deal. We’ve been taking pictures… lots of pictures… a ton of pictures!
And I’m just about ready to share some of them with you. But it’s gotta be a fair trade.

Sooo, if you have photos that you’ve taken with friends or celebrities that have been visiting town for the festival, send them to me. Just reply to this email and attach the photo – And if I like it, maybe it’ll even end up on the festival website.

In the meantime, here’s the photos that I’ve posted so, but check back every couple of hours, because there are sooo many more that’ll be going up real soon. www.imageevent.com/piglff2007

Newsline #13 - 13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

NEWSLINES

13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
Newsline #13 – July 22nd, 2007

OUR LAST CHANCE, LET’S MAKE IT LAST!

That’s right, it makes me a little sad to say it, but today is our official last “full” day of screenings. Yes, sure, sure, sure – we still have two days of festival left and a killer closing party planned, but for movie junkies like us, it’ll be our last day to sit in the theater from noon to midnight feeding our film-loving addiction!

Now yesterday was terrific, everything went exactly as planned. The It Ain’t Easy Being Green shorts were fantastic, as were the Love Is Blind shorts. We also got to see The Witnesses and Nina’s Heavenly Delights.

We were honored to be in the presence of Craig Lucas, screenwriter/director extraordinaire!!! Who graciously accepted the Artistic Achievement Award at the Arts Bank before sharing some funny stories and taking part in a Q&A on stage with Philadelphia film critic and esteemed author Gary Kramer.

The Craig Lucas after-party proved just as good as folks enjoyed drinks and karaoke at Tavern on Camac and saw exclusive musical performances by film festival executive staff members Rosemary Connors (Executive Director) and Jared Early (Managing Director) who each took a shot at the mic with acoustics from the baby grand piano.

Now, starting the day off today is a tough choice… but you really can’t go wrong. You’ve got to choose between Spider Lillies at the Prince at noon, which is a story about “two lonely women who meet in a tattoo parlor and discover that they share a past connection” or you can hear from Keegan, a cast member from Boy I Am which is playing at 12:15 at the Arts Bank, which is an “intelligent, provocative and intimate doc that follows three transitioning females to males.” Either way, you won’t be let down.

Mid-Afternoon offers the talked about Out In Philly Shorts Program, that I recommend all Philly-natives should make time for. This program offers 8 shorts from Philadelphia filmmakers, shot in and around town and is not to be missed. If you got your fill of shorts yesterday though, you can catch encore screenings of The Bubble, Rock Haven and Born Again showing at this same time.

If you cant make the shorts program at 2:30, then definitely visit our Sundae Social at DIVE (601 Walnut Street – 10th Floor) at 4:30pm. This will give you a chance to meet all of the shorts filmmakers while enjoying your favorite flavor of ice cream. Who could ask for more than that?

If you did attend the shorts program and have already spent some time with the Philly filmmakers, then at 5:00pm, you can head over to the Black Box at the Prince for our Conversation with Anthony Rapp. The RENT star has recently written a book and will be on hand to read passages from this new work and to answer questions about his life is the theater.

Last but not least though, by 9ish we recommend you head back to one of the theater venues to scarf down one last portion of festival films. You can go with The Victim at the Prince, Anger Me at the Wilma or Daughters of Chiquita at the Arts Bank. Whichever one you go with, you’ll be pleased you did.

Issue #12 - 13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

NEWSLINES

13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
Newsline #12 – July 21st, 2007

FRIDAY WAS FRISKY BUT SATURDAY’S GONNA BE SIZZLIN!!!

Two weekend’s of Booty shakin!
First, with RuPaul last weekend and then a whole lot more last night at Tori’s! Everyone that showed up for the film festival’s Booty Call party had a blast and shook it allllll night long.

But before we even got to the party, we had screenings. Lots of em’ and really good ones at that. There was The Bubble, Rock Haven, Butch Jamie, Holding Trevor, just to name a few. But that was yesterday, we’re focused on what’s happening today right!

Today’s a good day to see some of our many Short films, first is the shorts program It Ain’t Easy Being Green playing at the Wilma Theater at 12:15pm. Featuring 5 different short films, this program takes a close look at teens and young people dealing with sexuality. The second option for short films today is the Love Is Blind program beginning at the Arts Bank at 2:45pm. This one offers 7 shorts each one focusing on lesbian relationships.

If you’re more of a full-length kinda film-goer though, there’s still plenty to choose from, I’d suggest taking a look the much talked about The Witnesses or Nina’s Heavenly Delights, I’ve heard great things about both.

It’s also a great day to play “catch-up.” Maybe your friends have been talking all week long about one of the features you weren’t able to attend. Who wants to be that person? The one that can’t laugh along with the story or take part in the conversation, so here’s your chance to “catch-up” on what you missed. Just a couple of the movies screening for the second time today include Bears, The Gay Bed & Breakfast of Terror, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Kate Clinton and Two Sides of the Bed.

Once you’ve caught up on all your movies, you’ll have to decide how to spend the rest of the night. We’ve got a couple things lined up for you, take your pick.

You can get started early by joining us right after the screening of Longtime Companion to toast Artistic Achievement Award recipient Craig Lucas at Tavern on Camac at 7:00pm for the Prelude To A Kiss party. We’ll have drink specials till 9:00pm.

Or at 7:00pm you could check out the sounds of singer/songwriter Jay Brennan (also one of the stars of Holding Trevor) at one of my favorite places, L’Etage, 625 S. 6th street.

But if you’re a true die-hard movie-goer (like we are – yeah!) you’ll be in the theaters long past 7:00pm. In which case, we suggest some of our later events. We have the FUSE party at Club XO beginning at 10:00pm (1418 Rodman St) for a ‘Bollywood infused’ after party in honor of Nina’s Heavenly Delights or you could head to the Jamaican Jerk Hut for a special outdoor screening of the classic fave Mommie Dearest beginning at 11:15pm.

One way or another it’ll be non-stop ‘cause tonight’s definitely gonna be an all-nighter!
The big question is ‘How Long Can You Last?’ I guess we’re about to find out.

PICTURES! PICTURES! PICTURES!

Ok, so here’s the deal. We’ve been taking pictures… lots of pictures… a ton of pictures!
And I’m just about ready to share some of them with you. But it’s gotta be a fair trade.

Newsline #11 - 13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

NEWSLINES

13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
Newsline #11 – July 20th, 2007

Last Night We Kicked Off The Weekend Early
BUT NOW IT’S REALLY HERE!

Cock-tail loving festival guests enjoyed a 3 hour Happy hour event, the “Riverfront Reception” from 6:00pm-9:00pm at Keating’s River Grill at the Hyatt Regency Hotel by Penn’s Landing before strolling down the street for the free, outdoor screening of To Wong Foo… Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar at Penn’s Landing.

Pre-show entertainment included drag queens and flaming hoops jumpers, you would have to see it to believe it – and we did! The threat of rain didn’t stop movie-goers for second, we’re willing to get wet n’ wild if necessary.

For the folks who stayed up towards Center City, they had quite a bit to choose from. The sold out screening of Hairspray starring John Travolta packed the house at the Prince along with other festival hits The Witnesses and Gus Van Sant’s Mala Noche.

But that wasn’t the only sell-out. Fans also seemed to enjoy the experimental Picture of Dorian Gray and packed that house for that one too! Before it was all said and done, not a single ticket was left. Crowds also gathered for the Philadelphia made 2 Minutes Later, which debuted at our other festival in April. We just can’t get enough of this one.

GETTIN’ FRISKY ON FRIDAY

The weekend’s here. We hope you’re ready, because the whirlwind is about to begin. We’re gonna be hitting you hard and fast! This weekend packs in soooo many great movies, soooo many late night parties and sooo special presentations.
I’m not sure how we’re gonna keep up!!! Oh, who am I kidding?!?! We live for this stuff and so do you! It’s gonna be a blast.

Tonight we’ve got Two Sides of the Bed, One Night Stand and Men In The Nude – 3 films we’d all attend just because their titles are so enticing. Plus, we’re showing The Bubble, Rock Haven, Butch Jamie and Holding Trevor, movies that everyone’s been talking about since the moment the program guide came off the printing press.

ANNNNDD! Before the night is over, we’re all headed to Tori’s (no, not Tori Spelling, that’ll be closing night) for the Booty Call Party from 9:30pm – 2:00am. Tori’s is 119 South Street.

And that’s just the first day of this non-stop, down and dirty, final festival weekend!

PICTURES! PICTURES! PICTURES!

Newsline #10 - 13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

NEWSLINES

13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
Newsline #10 – July 19h, 2007

WHATTA WEDNESDAY!!!

Last night was a very special night for the film festival. We were honored to present Farley Granger with an award for Artistic Achievement. Mr. Granger is a class-act all the way and it’s no wonder that the world was enraptured by his presence after watching him on the silver-screen.

The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Carrie Rickey enjoyed a delightful conversation with Mr. Granger after he received his award and then introduced the festival’s special presentation of ROPE in 35mm.

Up the street at the Wilma, writer/directors Deondray Gossett and Quincy LeNear presented the first three episodes of their series the DL Chronicles Episodes and engaged the audience in Q&A afterwards.

Then the Bears were let loose… running rampant all over the Arts Bank. Yup, a full house crowded the venue and welcomed several guests including the film’s director Nico Sabentorio with special guest Mr. Leather Bear from Tampa Bay.

I’d love to get into the details about the Bear Bash that ensued shortly after the movie at the Bike Stop (114 South 12th Street) but the partying and mayhem is just too much to describe. You’ll have to see the photos to believe it. Check them out at www.imageevent.com/piglff2007

It may take a day for our staff photographer to get them posted… she’s still recovering herself after all!

TONIGHT WE’RE KICKING OFF THE WEEKEND EARLY

Cock-tail loving festival guests are invited to our 3 hour Happy hour event, the “Riverfront Reception” from 6:00pm-9:00pm at Keating’s River Grill at the Hyatt Regency Hotel by Penn’s Landing.

After that, just a quick stroll down the street, will be our free, outdoor screening of To Wong Foo… Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar at Penn’s Landing beginning at 8:30pm.

For the folks staying up towards Center City, you’ll have quite bit to choose from yourselves. You can choose to spend the entire night at the Prince and would enjoy the Centerpiece film The Witnesses, followed by the sold-out screening of Hairspray starring John Travolta and an encore presentation of Gus Van Sant’s directorial debut Mala Noche.

Although, If you missed the first screening of The DL Chronicles last night because you couldn’t miss out on the Farley Granger events, this is your chance to see them. The chronicles will be shown again tonight at 5:00pm at The Wilma Theater. Following them, will be your shot at seeing The Picture of Dorian Gray, which has been selected as the opening night in at other festivals and has quite a following.

Also, if you’re a true Philadelphian, you don’t want to miss Two Minutes Later, filmed right here in Philly, with a cast of Philadelphians, this movie gives you a chance to see your beloved city up in lights!

Finally, if you’ve been following the sold-out films below, you know that Kate Clinton is very close to a sell out show for this coming weekend. If you want to ensure that you get to see this hilarious comic at work, you can see it tonight at the Arts Bank at 7:15pm.

Newsline #9 - 13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

NEWSLINES

13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
Newsline #9 – July 18th, 2007

QUEER & KINKY

That’s right! The perfect adjectives for a Tuesday night during the film festival. Everyone that attended Quizzo at Valanni last night got Queer & Kinky – and had a great time doing it! Sponsored by the film festival, last night’s winner received complimentary passes to 10 films and events taking place between now and July 24th.

But before getting drinks at Valanni, festival guests enjoyed a rare screening of Mala Noche, Gus Van Sant’s 1985 directorial debut, they also took a penetrating (pun intended?... maybe) look into the sexual reassignment of Alexis Arquette in She’s My Brother and saw quite a bit of flesh from the top models of Playgirl and Men’s Workout in the film Dead Boyz Don’t Scream. Not bad for a Tuesday night, huh?

THE WEDNESDAY HUMP

Getting over the “Wednesday Hump” seems to take on a whole new meaning, when you say it during the Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, now doesn’t it. Not to worry though, we’ve got the perfect recipe for the mid-week blues you’re used to.

Tonight’s a big night, Hollywood legend of the silver-screen Farley Granger, star of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope and Strangers on a Train, will be presented with the festival’s Artistic Achievement Award. He’ll also be joined on stage for a public discussion with Philadelphia Inquirer film critic Carrie Rickey to discuss his career on (and off) screen.

After gossiping about love and life, Farley will introduce a special screening of ROPE shown on the big screen in glorious 35mm.

More than a handful of “Short” presentations will be offered tonight as well. On the list, will be the DL Chronicles Episodes 1, 2 & 3 along with Night Moves a shorts program featuring 8 abbreviated films from the US, Brazil, Denmark and Australia. You can catch them all by sticking around at the Wilma Theater between 7:15 and 11 o’ clock tonight.

The much anticipated Bears also makes its festival debut with a roar tonight at the Arts Bank, beginning at 9:30pm. This title is selling very well and could be a sell-out, so don’t wait till the last minute to secure your tickets. Afterwards, join everyone at the Bike Stop (114 South 12th Street) for the Bear Bash Afterparty… we won’t tell you what can happen there, but I’m sure you can just imagine.
Of and don’t think we’d try showing all these great movies without having the celebrity guests for you to meet up with as well. Let’s take a look.

Newsline #8 – July 17h, 2007

A TERRIFIC START

Monday proved to be a terrific start for the weekday portion of the festival. If the pattern proves correct, each day should grow larger and larger until we’re flaming hot and on fire again this weekend!

Last night, Bob Smith and Eddie Sarfaty, two of the comedians featured in the film joined the crowded theater at the Wilma for Laughing Matters…The Men before taking the stage for a comedic Q&A with the guests. Over at the Arts Bank, Maria Roman was welcomed as the guest of honor at the screening of Trantasia, while the Prince Music up the street pulled in a full house for the Shorts Program International Male.
This Shorts presentation featured six short films, each one representing a different country (Spain, Australia, Germany, Israel, Sweden and Japan).

The evening climaxed at the Trocadero, where Movie Mondays partnered with the festival for a showing of everyone’s favorite cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show at 9:00pm.

TODAY’S GAMEPLAN
Today offers a look at the “not always glittery ride through Hollywood and identity” with a screening of Alexis Arquette: She’s My Brother at the Wilma Theater. If your schedule seems a bit flexible tonight, check this one out now, as the weekend screening of the film is closing in on a sell out.

Also, don’t miss the festival’s special presentation of Mala Noche, Gus Van Sant’s 1985 directorial debut taking place at 9:30pm at the Prince Music Theater. This is a rare event that we’ve all been looking for and something that you don’t want to miss.

Screening at the same time at the Arts Bank Theater is Dead Boyz Don’t Scream, another film that looks like it might sell out before showtime.

For those looking for a great place to grab a drink tonight, look no further. Valanni’s Restaurant and Lounge offers Queer Kinky Quizzo every Tuesday night at 10:30 and we’ll all be there drinking our fill.

But speaking of festival films nearing a sell out.

INCLUDE ME OUT
Just kidding! That just happens to be the title of Farley Granger’s new book. Written with his partner Bob Calhoun it takes a good look at his career and his many love affairs with Hollywood’s most prominent leading men and women.

Farley’s will be joining us tomorrow night at the Prince Music Theater for a conversation with Philadelphia Inquirer critic Carrie Rickey after receiving an award for Artistic Achievement from the Philadelphia Film Society.

We’re also thrilled to be showing a brand new 35mm print of Alfred Hitchcock’s ROPE starring Farley in most of his most memorable roles.

All the fun begins at 5:00pm at Nineteen Café inside the Park Hyatt Bellevue at Broad and Walnut Streets before swinging over to the Prince Music Theater at 7:00pm for the award and screening.

Get your tickets now and don’t worry about stopping at the book or video store. We’ll have copies of Farley’s new book INCLUDE ME OUT along with his films ROPE and STRANGERS ON A TRAIN available for sale at the event.

Newsline #7 - 13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

NEWSLINES

13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
Newsline #7 – July 16th, 2007

THE WILD RIDE OF THE WEEKEND HAS SLOWED BUT THE FESTIVAL IS STILL GOING AT HIGH SPEED

The rising temperature of the city didn’t hinder the masses one bit. Couples “came out” of the woodwork as did large groups of friends to fill every screening, party and event that was offered. The city was alive and we’re pleased to take responsibility for injecting an overdose of testosterone and estrogen into Philadelphia.

The pace of this weekend will be pretty hard to match and was definitely hectic, frenetic, manic and energetic – But that’s exactly how we like it. Everywhere you turned, you were face to face with Hollywood hunks, debuting directors and lovely lesbians.

SUNNY SUNDAY

Today, offered a great opportunity to see a great batch of films making their festival debuts, including the “visually sumptuous and explicitly erotic lesbian feature” The Chinese Botanist’s Daughters, Pantasya, an exotic film from the Philippines “featuring five erotic interludes,” as well as Kitchen Table Stories, one of this year’s featured Shorts programs highlighting women of color. This collection focused on female stories centered on African-American, Hispanic and Lebanese women.

And if you had missed them the first time, but needed to see them after hearing all the buzz, we offered encore screenings of the erotic-thriller Socket, Shelter, Out At The Wedding and of course, Starrbooty.

At the Black Box inside the Prince Theater, Diane Marini and director Pilar Prassas were greeted by a sold-out crowd for their screening of In Sickness and in Health, the true story of a South Jersey couples’ efforts to legalize same-sex marriages.

Those folks not attending the late screenings of 2:37, Pantasya and In The Blood all gathered at Lucky Strikes Bowling Lanes (1311 Chestnut Street) for the Strykes for Dykes (and gay boys too!) social event. Festival patrons were graciously offered complimentary bowling and billiards until midnight and everyone had a ball.

MANIC MONDAY
Don’t think that just because the weekend is over, that you can just skate through the rest of the festival… No, no, no. There’s still waaay too much fun to be had, waaay too many more movies to see and waaay too many more parties to crash.

Here are some options to consider for tonight.

Showtimes begin at 5:00pm, which will give you plenty of time to feign an attack of lunchtime food poisoning, leave work early, pick up all your friends and leaving not a moment to spare in getting to the Prince Music Theater for Four Minutes, a stunning story that takes us into Germany’s Mannheim Women’s Prison for violent, female offenders were a deep bond is forming between a prisoner and her teacher. For something a little lighter, you can still feign food poisoning, leave work early, grab your friends but can head to the Wilma Theater instead to the stand-up comic film Laughing Matters… The Men.

If you’ve got a boss who showed no sympathy when your did your best impersonation, hunched-over, holding your stomach and moaning about the lunch cart vendor on the corner, we’ve still plenty for you to see.

At 7:15pm, we roll out another slate of screenings, including the Shorts Program International Male, at the Prince Music Theater. This presentation features six short films, each one representing a different country (Spain, Australia, Germany, Israel, Sweden and Japan).

Meanwhile, right down Broad street at the Wilma, another country France will be featured with the film Times Have Been Better, a delightful comedy about a gay man “coming out” to his brother and parents.

Also at 7:15pm, Tick Tock Lullaby will hit the screen at the Arts Bank, telling the story of a “sassy” lesbian couple in London, who’ve just noticed that their biological clocks are ticking.

The evening’s final full round of screenings offers a chance to see encore showings of three features that first played during opening weekend. Eternal Summer screens at the Prince at 9:30, The Godfather of Disco dances into the Wilma at the same time and Trantasia transitions over at the Arts Bank.

Last but not least, don’t forget that Movie Mondays at the Trocadero has been festivalized (Is that a word???). We’re teaming up and showing everyone’s favorite cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, showtime is 9:00pm.

WHO’S IN TOWN?

Today may also be your last chance to get snapshots of some of your favorite festival guests, who’ve been spending the weekend in town.

Laughing Matters… The Men, Monday, July 16th, Wilma Theater, 5:00pm – Comedians Bob Smith and Eddie Sarfaty
Trantasia, Monday, July 16th, Arts Bank, 9:30pm – Cast member Maria Roman and director Jeremy Stanford

13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
Newsline #6 – July 15th, 2007

SHAKE YOUR BOOOOTY!!!!

How much fun was that?!?!

C'mon! She’s one of the most recognizable faces on the planet, she’s larger-than-life, she’s a self-proclaimed “Supermodel”, she’s the most undeniable glamour queen in the world… that’s right it was RuPaul herself! Right there shaking her booty up on stage in front of the entire Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and the BEST PART OF ALL – She was up there thanking TLA Entertainment for the opportunity to do it!!!

What a night! What a film festival!!! We hope you’re enjoying everything as much as we are.

SIZZLIN’ SATURDAY…

Today, started off with a tribute to one of the most prominent gay pioneers in history as the Philadelphia Film Society saluted Barbara Gittings by presenting the Free Library of Philadelphia with a $1,000 donation, in honor of the Independence Branch’s Gittings Book Collection.

Barbara’s surviving lifetime partner, Kay Tobin Lahusen was in attendance and graciously described how she and Barbara looked forward to attending the festival each year and how Barbara was a “closet” film enthusiast. She relayed jokingly that Barbara would be thrilled that she’d finally be “outed” as a lover of the movies.

Just a few hours later and a quick flight of steps away from where Barbara Gittings was honored in the Black Box, more awards were distributed. This year’s Rising Star Award was presented to a humble and ever-so sexy Charlie David who donned a stunning suit and tie for the occasion. Charlie genuinely thanked his family, friends and fans for supporting him and his decisions to be a publicly gay figure in the LGBT community while pursuing his career in acting. He relayed that being true to himself was far more important than a career, but with the support from so many people, (including his grandparents, who have even helped finance his next film) he has been able to succeed and to be recognized with honors such as the Rising Star Award.

As evening approached, Charlie was later spotted enjoying other festival presentations with friend and co-star Jesse Archer including the script-reading of Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild. You wouldn’t believe the roars of laughter erupting from doors of the Wilma, as these guys did what they do best -- Got Wild! Joined by Entourage’s Rex Lee and Short Bus’ Peter Sickles, the entire cast brought down the house and gave everyone a sneak peek at what we can expect from the next movie. Now that we’ve had a taste, we can barely wait!

And then the ‘Starr’ arrived…

The applause began…

The camera flashes lit up…

The room ignited…

And RuPaul sashayed her way across our stage.

But that was just the beginning. After a sold-out screening of Starrbooty, Ru and her cast members, joined audience members and festival patrons for the X-rated afterparty at Nineteen Lounge and kept it going until 2:00am.

How are we ever supposed to top this? How could we top this? Well, it may not be easy, but we’re still gonna try.

WHERE YOU SHOULD BE TODAY

Today, will be a great opportunity to see a solid batch of excellent films during their first festival screenings, including the “visually sumptuous and explicitly erotic lesbian feature” The Chinese Botanist’s Daughters, Pantasya, an exotic film from the Philippines “featuring five erotic interludes,” as well as Kitchen Table Stories, one of this year’s featured Shorts programs highlighting women of color. This collection focuses on female stories centered on African-American, Hispanic and Lebanese women.

If you missed them the first time around, we’ll also be giving you one more chance to check out the erotic-thriller Socket, two sell-out film’s from Friday night, Shelter and Out At The Wedding and the encore of Starrbooty.

Once you’ve had your daily fill of screenings, you can head over to Lucky Strikes Bowling Lanes (1311 Chestnut Street) for our Strykes for Dykes (and gay boys too!) get together social at 10:00pm. They’ve graciously offered all of our guests complimentary bowling and billiards until midnight as long as we handle the cost of our own drinks. Not a bad deal at all!

Newsline #5 - 13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

NEWSLINES

13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
Newsline #5 – July 14h, 2007

WITH AN EVENING OF SOLD OUT SCREENINGS THE FESTIVAL IS DEFINITELY IN FULL SWING!

Yesterday was our official first full day of screenings last night offered 3 separate parties to choose from. What did you end up seeing? What soiree did you wind up at? And with whom did you spend your evening with? We won’t tell if you won’t!

The ladies of Out At The Wedding (Cathy DeBuono and Andrea Marcellus) along with short-film director Ursula Burton (The Happiest Day of His Life) shined as they presented their films to a completely full house at the Wilma Theater before joining the excited audience afterwards at Sisters on South Street for their very own “Wedding Reception.”

Meanwhile, back on the Avenue of the Arts, another thrilled filmmaker, Jonah Markowitz received the first ever Scion Award presented by Official sponsor Scion Automotive for his directorial debut Shelter. After graciously accepting the award in front of a sold out crowd, Markowitz invited all of the festival-goers at the theater to join him at Sotto Varalli for his very own post-screening celebration, “The Helter Shelter Soiree!”

Last but not least, The Gay Bed & Breakfast of Terror sold out at the Arts Bank venue at 9:30 as well. If you weren’t able to make it to this one, check it out at the second screening next weekend, Saturday July 21st at the Wilma Theater

WHERE YOU SHOULD BE TODAY

Okay, okay, so last night was really, really great, but we have so much going on this weekend that we should do our best to keep our focus on what’s ahead.

First and foremost, it’s important to start the day off right, it’s simply too important to miss our SALUTE TO BARBARA GITTINGS – This free event will take place at 12:00 Noon at the Black Box location inside the Prince Music Theater. This will certainly be one of the most important events during the entire festival as we pay tribute to a legendary gay & civil rights pioneer. A reception will be offered before the Phila Film Society’s donation of $1,000 to the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Barbara Gitting’s collection at the Independence Branch. Followed by the documentary film Gay Pioneers.

Next, you won’t want to miss your chance to see young Hollywood hunks Jessie Archer and Charlie David on stage together after the presentation of the Rising Star Award beginning at 2:45pm at the Prince Music Theater.
RISING STAR AWARD presented to CHARLIE DAVID – This is the award we present each year to an up and coming talent in the gay entertainment community and with Charlie appearing in both our opening night and closing night films, he’s the perfect recipient. After the presentation he’ll be joined on stage by co-star Jessie Archer to introduce our second screening of A Four Letter Word.

As the sun begins to set, you’re gonna want to head over to the Wilma Theater to catch an exclusive peak at Another Gay Sequel during our Another Gay Sequel Staged Reading. This event taking place at 7:00pm, will give festival-goers the very first look at the upcoming sequel to last year’s hilarious hit comedy Another Gay Movie. Not only are the fan-favorite cast members returning but they’re bringing new friends with them too, including Entourage’s Rex Lee and Short Bus’ Peter Sickles.

The evening’s fun doesn’t end there though… you’ll need to hustle over to the Prince Music Theater after the reading so that you don’t miss RuPaul's appearance at her screening of Starrbooty. Afterwards she’ll be joining all the audience members at the free after party, aptly titled XXX at XIX beginning at 11:00pm.

That’s not all though! There’s plenty of other things going on too. You could check out the movie with everyone’s favorite name in the festival Itty Bitty Titty Committee before meeting up at the TPDS Club afterwards for the very cleverly titled after-party “The Itty Bitty Titty Festivity”

OR…

You could get nostalgic watching Joyce Heyser in the 80’s teen classic Just One of the Guys shown outside at the Jamaican Jerk Hut (1436 South Street) beginning at 11:15pm.

If you think it’s a little too warm to enjoy an outdoor screening, we also suggest Socket, an erotic thriller screening at the Wilma at 9:30pm. Just one thing though, we can’t guarantee you wont end up just as hot and bothered as you would during the outdoor screening. We hear that this one won’t disappoint if you’re looking for sex appeal.

WHO’S IN TOWN?

Now, we know there’s an awful lot to chose from, so if snapping a shot of a favorite celebrity might help you make up your mind, here’s a look at who’s going to be in town.

Newsline #4 - 13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

NEWSLINES

13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
Newsline #4 – July 13h, 2007

WOW…

What a night!!! I don’t know what else to say…
Well, I can tell you? If you’re reading this then you’re probably in the same boat that we’re in… you partied all night and haven’t even made it to bed yet!

We promised a non-stop fresh, flesh & fun-filled opening night and I think we delivered.
If you missed it, you REALLY missed it, but here’s a quick recap to give you an idea of what went on.

WHAT YOU MISSED…

Naked Pixies dancing on platforms, non-stop open bars pouring Pink Vodka and Parrot Bay drinks all night, men ripping their shirts open on the dance floor and so much more…

Last night the Philadelphia Film Society officially opened the doors on this year’s festival and presented the sold out theater with our opening night film A Four Letter Word. Guests were already having a good time but then jumped to their feet to offer a standing ovation as Philadelphia Democratic Mayoral candidate Michael Nutter took the stage and surprised the audience by providing this year's official opening night "Welcome".

Mr. Nutter joked with the audience and provided a few laughs before getting serious for a moment with an important message. He summed up his thoughts about the festival perfectly, stating “Our diversity makes us who we are, our diversity is what makes us Philadelphia!”

Next, before entertaining the fans with a quick Q&A after the film, A Four Letter Word star and co-writer, Jesse Archer, got down and dirty in the lobby of the Prince Music Theater while posing for the media. Jesse was a great sport, spreading himself across the top of the lobby’s grand piano and then laying himself out on the floor to make sure that each and every photographer got exactly what they needed.

Then we all got to the party and things really heated up! DJ Lady Miss Kier spun the sounds as guests and party-goers were greeted by dancing (and in some cases, mostly naked) pixies in leather and fairy wings from our friends at the Fringe Festival, not to mention body-painted performers, hula-hoop specialists, dancers, hors d'ouevres, dinner, dessert and endless complimentary drinks from the sponsoring partners.

WHERE YOU SHOULD BE TODAY

It is Friday, the 13th after all, so naturally we have to have an outrageous horror film on hand… and we do
